The Mycology Laboratory forms part of the Department of Microbiology at the Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It is operating since the year 2000 and it is funded through National, EU and international research grants.
MISSION
It provides consultative services assisting in the characterization of fungi, prevention and control of human fungal infections and communicable fungal diseases. It is actively involved in organizing educational events for Health professionals and clinical scientists.
VISION
To sustain the infrastructure and the necessary resources for basic and applied research so as to contribute in the cost-effectiveness for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of fungal diseases. To advance and promote the sciences relevant to fungal diseases through education, advocacy, and scholarly exchange of scientific information.
CORE VALUES
The following four core values serve as guiding principles as it implements its strategic plans.
Integrity
Accountability to high professional and ethical standards
Financial stewardship

Colleagueship
Encouragement of personal and organizational collaboration at a National and International level
Safeguarding the spirit of trust and respect to our work
Open communication with our colleagues

Mentorship (In chronological order)
A/Prof. G. Skiniotis, PhD

G. Gaitanis, MD. PhD, Asst. Prof. Med. School, University of Ioannina

M. Arabatzis, MD, PhD, Lecturer elect, Med. School University of Thessaloniki

Sharing knowledge
Respect diversity in our professional and organizational relationships and activities and communicate knowledge through educational conduct to our colleagues
Promotion and support a culture of mentoring among our colleagues
Endorsement of policy based on partnerships with National and International Organizations

Innovation
Constant search of ways to positively change our status quo and sustain close collaboration with Mycologists abroad.
Implementation of new ideas to improve consultation practices
Support, encouragement and reward for creativity and independent scientific activities

STRATEGIC GOALS
Strengthen and expand our Regional activities
Sustain our status as reliable source of research information
Functioning on a three-year financial operations plan that attracts funding from public, philanthropic and EU sources.

HELLENIC COLLECTION OF PATHOGENIC FUNGI

The collection of pathogenic fungi is registered with
the WFCC (World Data Center on Microorganisms)
under the acronym UOA/HCPF929

The collection hosts a large number of Type and
Neotype strains from: the ATCC (American Type
Culture Collection); the CBS (Centraalbureau voor
Schimmelcultures, the Netherlands); IMI (International Mycological Institute, Surrey, UK) and the NCPF (National Collection of Pathogenic Fungi, Bristol, UK).
The Collection operates in close collaboration with other European, Australian and USA Reference and Molecular Mycology Laboratories.

RESEARCH

Enviroment & Human Health
In ongoing collaboration of the University of the Aegean , the University of Crete and the Geology and Biology Departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens we have research projects on public health mycology.

The main research activities of the laboratory, as supported by corresponding publications, include:
Taxonomy
Non-culture identification of fungal pathogens
Epidemiology
Application of molecular methods in the timely diagnosis of superficial systemic fungal infections
Yeast transcription factors and bioactive metabolites
Validation of novel molecular and immunoserodiagnostic methods for the diagnosis of fungal infections
Molecular typing of Aspergillus, Candida, Cryptococcus, Trichosporon, Malassezia, Black yeasts and the dermatophytes
Susceptibility testing
Susceptibility testing of novel antifungal agents
Quality control of laboratory methods

Other services that can be provided include:
Environmental sampling/monitoring for presence of moulds and yeasts
Identification of fungi associated with food spoilage
