Nicolas Moussiopoulos is a Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and the Head of the Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Environmental Engineering. He is also a Honorary Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (formerly University of Karlsruhe). In the periods 1997-1999 and 2003-2007 he chaired Αristotle UniversityÕs Department of Mechanical Engineering, from September 2006 until August 2010 he was the Dean of the School of Engineering. October 2010 Professor Moussiopoulos was appointed Deputy Chairman of the International Hellenic University. Since 2002 he is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. In the same year he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Professor Moussiopoulos received several awards and prizes, among them the Heinrich Hertz Award in 1990.

 

Professor Moussiopoulos is the author of more than 400 scientific publications, including more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 26 books. His research work addresses several issues in the broad field of energy and the environment. He is particularly involved with the development of atmospheric wind and dispersion/chemistry models and their application at the local-to-regional scale for air quality assessment and other regulatory purposes. Ηe was actively involved in EUROTRAC, the Eureka atmospheric environmental project, and ACCENT, the Network of Excellence on atmospheric composition change. Currently, he has a leading role in the projects MEGAPOLI and TRANSPHORM, funded under ECÕs 7th Framework Programme. In the last twenty years Professor Moussiopoulos participated at research projects with a total budget exceeding 20 million Û.

 

Over more than 15 years Professor Moussiopoulos co-ordinated several tasks of the European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change, within the multi-annual work programme of the European Environment Agency. In the same period, he has been involved in several large international and national environmental impact assessment studies, largely related to air pollution. He has consulted several Greek Ministers and has represented Greece in numerous international committees and bodies. At present he is the Greek representative in the Programme Committee ÒRegions of Knowledge, Research Potential and Coherent Development of PoliciesÓ.
